It’s back to school time, and with that comes big college plans for an amazing year! How can you green your campus lifestyle and create the lowest possible impact on our environment? Bring a smile to your university’s Office of Sustainability (SVC’s Sustainability Committee) when you adopt one or all of our five green back to college tips for a great school year:
Walking to class is the easiest way to be green and stay healthy!
1. Transport Sustainably
Waking up early for class can be a pain, but what’s even worse is finding a parking spot – especially one that’s free. Remove extra morning stress by walking or biking to class. These low-impact, planet-friendly activities will leave you feeling happier at the start of each day, and not just because you’re saving a ton of money on expensive parking passes. If the weather in your region doesn’t cooperate year-round, take advantage of public transportation or rideshare programs like Uber and Lyft. Or ride the bus.
2. Add Some Green…Literally
When going back to school shopping, many college students forget about nature’s best decor – plants! Whether you purchase a maintenance-free orchid or a selection of low-light herbs, adding some living greenery to your dorm promotes wellness and adds a vital boost of CO2. Live plants are less expensive and less harmful to the environment than floral bouquets. Plus thriving indoor produce garden could help you curb that dreaded freshman 15!
3. Know What Can #BeRecycled
Planning a party for your friends (or the entire campus)? Check your school’s recycling options before you shop for supplies! Make a conscious effort to purchase only decor and disposable cups that are recyclable and set up clearly-labeled recycling containers for partygoers to use when they’re done with their bottles or cans. If your event is for a campus-wide organization (like a fraternity or a social club), your group might even get special recognition for being green from the Office of Sustainability. Read this brochure about what to recycle.
Some campuses only recycle certain grades of plastic. Check your school’s sustainability site before buying party supplies.
4. Limit Your Consumption
Yes, you’re an adult and your parents are no longer around to clean up after you. So now it’s up to you to conserve water while brushing your teeth and flip the light switch when leaving the room. Feel like going eco-crazy? Open the windows on a breezy day to limit your A/C use. There are countless ways to cut back on consumption without affecting your lifestyle, and college is a great place to start.
5. Clean Out Your Closet
Dorm rooms are too tiny to hold onto past memories. Clean out your closet and drop off into your neighborhood ATRS Recycler before you move! This will streamline your move-in day on campus and save precious space, leaving less for you and your roommate to argue about. Besides, will you really ever wear those pesky XXL t-shirts from random university events again?
Following these green college tips doesn’t just lessen your carbon footprint. It also helps build environmentally-friendly habits to carry you through future chapters of your life. Start developing your eco-conscience this year and make our green tips and resources a part of your everyday life.
