Jill Fugate Series
Mount Vernon Campus - 10/23/2019
Since the mid-1990s, Chuck has been developing curriculum related to Puget Sound and the Salish Sea bioregion, which includes the educational district Skagit Valley College serves. In 2008 the Seattle Art Museum held the first ever art exhibit on Pacific Coast Salish Art. After the SAM exhibit, with the continuing mentorship of Vi taqwseblu Hilbert, Upper Skagit elder, teacher, and translator of Lushootseed (Puget Salish), he began incorporating Salish art into his ethnic studies, history, and especially English 101 classes. In this presentation he will share some of the important cultural, historic, and scientific knowledge Salish art conveys about our bioregion, and how it differs from the Canadian-Alaskan totem pole tradition.
